Mike MaWhinney given USTA Elementary Science Teacher Award for 2013-14 school year

Mike MaWhinney, third grade teacher at J.R. Smith Elementary, has been named as the Elementary Science teacher of the year for the 2013-2014 school year by USTA, the Utah science Teachers Association. USTA is a state-wide organization for Science Teachers at all grade levels. Mr. MaWhinney is in his 29th year of teaching third grade at J.R. Smith Elementary.

Besides instilling in his students a love of reading and teaching the core subjects Mr. MaWhinney has taught science to all third grade students each year at J.R. Smith.

Mike earned his bachelors in elementary education from Weber State University. He added a master’s degree from Utah State University in 1991. He has won a number of awards over the years, including Best of State K-12 Teacher, Teacher of the Year for Wasatch district, and 2nd place Wasatch Ace Award Teacher of the Year. He continues to study yearly at various classes, seminars and conferences. Mike always says, that he would “teach even if they didn’t pay him, and that there are some days you couldn’t pay him enough!”

Mike is a huge Disney fan, and is big part of the successful Disney Program the J.R. Smith third graders present each year.

Mike is a super husband and great dad to five children and a lovely daughter-in-law. He serves in his church and can be found on weekends and in the summer helping his family run the Dairy Keen fast food restaurant which is a big
